“It Was Just for Fun... Until It Took Over My Life” – My Personal Journey Through Gambling Addictio
This story is based on my own experience. If you or someone you know is struggling, know that you're not alone—and healing is possible.
▌A harmless thrill? That's what I thought.
I was 39 when I left my job for a short break. A friend introduced me to a sports betting app.
“Try it out,” he said. “It’s just for fun—you might even win enough for a cup of coffee.”
And just like that, I placed my first bet.
The first few wins were exciting. The rush, the dopamine, the feeling of being "in control"... But it didn’t stay innocent for long. A few hundred dollars quickly turned into a few thousand.
I started skipping meals, staying up for late-night matches, constantly refreshing scores.
What began as entertainment slowly became a compulsion—a quiet obsession creeping into every corner of my life.
▌“Why can’t I stop?” – The invisible hijacking of my brain
One afternoon, my wife saw our bank statement. She didn’t say a word—just quietly walked out of the room.
That silence hit harder than any loss I’d suffered on a bet.
In my search for answers, I discovered something that changed everything:
Gambling addiction is a real brain disorder.
Just like drug or alcohol dependency, gambling hijacks the brain’s reward system. It’s not about weak willpower—it’s about a neurological imbalance that feeds on thrill, risk, and hope.
▌Finding help: The day I dialed 1336
I still remember that moment. I stared at the phone for what felt like forever before calling the national helpline: 1336.
I was shaking when I finally said, “Hi… I think I need help with gambling.”
That call led me to the Korea Center for Gambling Problems and eventually to a local recovery group in Daegu.
We called ourselves “The Sober Gamblers.” Men and women, young and old—we all had a story. We all had regrets. But we also had hope.
▌Addiction doesn’t end with a win—it ends with connection
During recovery, I learned three vital truths:
-
You can’t outplay addiction.
-
Paying off gambling debt won’t fix the problem—it might even fuel it.
-
Support isn’t a weakness. It’s your secret weapon.
After over a year clean, I’m rebuilding not just my finances but my relationships. I’ve deleted all gambling apps, blocked certain websites, and set up financial guardrails with my family.
But more importantly—I’m learning to trust myself again
▌If you’re reading this, it’s not too late.
Whether you’re the one struggling or watching someone you love spiral into gambling, I want you to hear this:
“Addiction doesn’t make you broken—it makes you human. And humans can heal.”
